De Linwood Naylor
I am delighted to report that I received "Le Requin" in today's mail. I
was also quite pleased that David Robert's translation of the majority of the text was included. I have enjoyed reading and studying Mr. Robert's translations of "The Seventy-four Gun Ship" and "The History of the French Frigate", but I am thoroughly impressed by this monograph. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Linwood Naylor

Mr. Berti,
I received the two books yesterday. Both books surpassed my expectations. I consider Mr. Boudriot's books to be the premier examples of marine historical research.

Review

I just received "L'Art du Modelisme" and "Musee de la Marine Modeles Historiques" in the mail. I should preface this by stating I collect books on ship modeling...I just counted over 70. Many of them are junk so it is a rare occasion where a new book exceeds my expectations. I am not given to hyperbole but let me just say that each of these books is the best I've ever seen in their categories.

"L'Art du Modelisme", by Bernard Frilich, is 300 pages of professional 9" x 12" color photos, illustrations, and techniques for scratch building a number of sailing vessels from 1680-1820. The chapter on cannons alone is 21 pages and includes casting, turning on a lathe, making carriages, etc. Other chapters include scratch building the hull, sculpting, masting, and rigging. I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard of M. Frolich but I can say that if he were alive 300 years ago he would have been building Admiralty models. His work is among the most exquisite I've ever seen.
Now the bad news...the book is in French and will not be of practical use to most kit builders or beginners on this list. The French part is fairly insignificant (although I do speak French) due to the abundance of excellent photos. So who is this book for? Its for any scratch builder, Romero practicum user, intermediate builder aspiring for greatness, or any other ship modeler who loves to see the pinnacle of his/her hobby.

"Modeles Historiques, Musee de la Marine", by Jean Boudriot, is a tour de force of how every museum collection should be shown. It consists of a brief general introduction then 300 pages of professional quality photos of historic ship models covering the 1700-early 1800's. The pages are again 9" x 12" against a dark backgound and even include the latest technology, fiber optics, to peer inside the hulls. Seeing this book makes me wish the author would do a similar treatments of August Crabtree's, the Naval Academy Museum, and the National Maritime Museum collections which surely deserve the same.
You'll notice I haven't mentioned price...check it out yourself at http://www.ancre.fr. They're a lot of Francs! However, I'm a firm believer in paying for quality and the binding, photos, and text of these two books is exceptional. One caveat...it took over four weeks for the books to arrive by "second class" airmail. Perhaps they loaded the mail on an airplane then placed it on a ship but I think surface mail is the better deal price wise.

Hope these reviews are helpful. I placed them here because I doubt if you'll hear of these books in the American press...a pity because they should be offered to ship modelers everywhere!
